What a great joy to be able to arrange for Rhondda to come to the Gardens this morning.
Rhondda and her late husband Mike were foundation members of the Club and were both granted Life Membership for their work in establishing the gardens. Sadly Mike has passed away and now Rhondda is planning to relocate to the South Coast to be near her sister and family. However president Peter, secretary Helen, treasurer Bob and his wife Robyne had the opportunity to meet and welcome her, to show her around the Gardens and to have morning tea with her before she goes.
Robyne Moulds picked her up and she was able to drive her to the entry gate as it was nice and dry.
In conversation Rhondda recalled an early meeting of 4 or 5 people before the gardens had been commenced. They were out where the orchard is and during the meeting they all started laughing. It seems that all of their chairs had gradually sunk into the ground as it was so wet. Surprised they still continued with the project!
We found out:
- The garden near the front of the office part of the building was originally established by Mike and Rhondda. We spoke to her about rebuilding the area as a rock garden with bromeliads in between the rocks.
- She said that there is a brick (or similar plaque) that was in the Garden noting the couple’s work. Understand this plague is with a current member of the Gardens and may be able to be returned and permanently affixed in the new garden. She fully supported the proposed garden redevelopment and offered plants from her garden.
- The painting on the outside of the toilet door and building was done by her sister, so have arranged for her to get copies of the photo of the artwork for her to take down to her sister at Xmas time.
Thank you for visiting Rhonnda, good luck with your next adventure, and it is wonderful to hear some of the history.
