Traditionally, Anzac Day is garlic planting time. I’m finding that it is getting earlier and earlier as the climate warms. It’s not too late yet but it will be soon. We’re due some real wet weather for the next few weeks, so it might pay to plant corms in pots and keep them somewhere you can keep them from getting waterlogged till they sprout – garlic does not like wet feet.
Garlic is also strongly day-length sensitive, so make sure you are planting a variety suited to this area – early or day length neutral varieties will work best, for example e Glenlarge, Italian Pink, Italian Red and Southern Glen – or just buy locally grown garlic at the Farmer’s Market to plant.
Plant corms pointy end up, with the tip just under the surface, in well composted, well drained soil. Give a bit of space between them an legumes (peas or broad beans this time of year), but they’ll grow very happily alongside all your brassicas, or your carrots or beets or leafy greens.
Happy garlic growing
